Many were also given a turned-down bolt handle, replacing the original straight bolt handle style. Further updates to Weimar-era Gewehr 98’s often included the replacement of the Lange Visier rear sight with a standard Karabiner 98k-style rear sight, a hole cut through the side of the stock to accommodate a Karabiner 98k-style side mounted sling system and sometimes a shortening of the barrel to Karabiner 98k length. Rifles allowed into service with the early Weimar security forces were stamped with a “1920” marking on their receiver ring.

The Weimar Republic, the successor state to the German Empire, implemented a program designed to update their remaining supplies of Gewehr 98 rifles for the Reichswehr in the years following World War I. Link to a detailed history of this weapon:

I have since corrected it as in my defense, the repro sling was brand new and VERY stiff. Additionally, I know that in the photos, the sling in "parade" position is not really correct. I suspect that this is from a walnut stocked K98k, as they are nearly identical. To address the elephant in the room, yes the handguard is not matching, however it is nearly impossible to find a Gewehr 98 one, let alone one that matches the stock color. Speaking of the buttplate, the screws for the buttplate offered no resistance upon removal, and I had to "rebuild" the screw holes with toothpicks and woodglue+sawdust. Luckily all hardware for the transitional stock was matching, and if it wasn't serialized, it had Imperial German proofmarks.

Sanded down in the past, as the buttplate sits proud of the wood. Regardless, I ended up finding a pretty salvageable transitional German Gewehr 98 stock on eBay, which uses grasping grooves, stock information disc (albeit a blank one), and has some Imperial German proofmarks imprinted in the wood, albeit somewhat faint.

However, a test firing of 20 rounds proved that the recoil lug crack is only superficial. Originally when I got the rifle, it was bedded in a Czech Vz.98/22 stock, however there was a significant crack on both sides of the recoil lug that caused some concern.

Another little "surprise" was that somewhere in this rifle's history, a previous owner decided to add a coat of light colored paint the Lange Visier sight! Using heat and a brass scraping tool, I slowly and carefully peeled it off without scratching the original finish. Some light rubbing of oil on a 0000 bronze wool pad did wonders for the parts that were originally in the white. There was a bit of rust on the rifle when I got it, but I didn't go the whole "Mark Novak" route, as it wasn't a rusty pipe like the Mauser 71/84 I have was. Rear sight assembly, rear barrel band, floorplate and triggerguard are force matched. Bolt is a mismatch with some Czech/Turkish components like the shroud and the cocking piece. The rear sights retain the original 200mm minimum setting from before the Spitzer update, but it is just an aesthetic thing now, as the "rollercoaster" Lange Visier sight minimum setting is still 400m (the "4" setting). What is interesting about this rifle are some of the older features that I haven't seen too often.

Here is my latest acquisition, a 1900 dated Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf Gewehr 98.
